Cane Commitment

University of Miami students receive a world-class education from faculty at the leading-edge of their fields, seamlessly weaving teaching, and research efforts to advance knowledge. The University of Miami also offers students experiential and participation-based learning opportunities.

The Cane Commitment is an initiative designed to showcase the competencies/skills and experiences undergraduate students acquire in and outside of the classroom.  The Cane Commitment ensures that every UM graduate is prepared to succeed in the dynamic workplace and diverse society of today and tomorrow.

The University of Miami has identified six capabilities to foster lifelong professional and personal growth and development.

Ethical Judgement

Recognize personal responsibilities in various situations, consider impact of actions as measured by their moral implications, express ethical concerns, and principles clearly, seek solutions to conflict in a fair and ethical manner, and navigate diverse cultural and social values. Recognize ethical issues in a variety of settings, be familiar with established ethical perspectives and be able to apply them to ethical dilemmas.

Professionalism

Demonstrate leadership and professionalism through proficiency in one’s discipline as evidenced by the ability and inclination to take initiative, be empathetic, act with civility and integrity, demonstrate responsibility, collaborate, and effectively communicate in various settings including interpersonal, group and team, public, and mediated contexts.

Problem Solving

Demonstrate the ability to systematically and thoughtfully seek solutions to complex problems by discovering, analyzing and synthesizing relevant information, applying appropriate theories and knowledge, embracing change and working collaboratively with diverse stakeholders.

Reasoning

Demonstrate the ability to use evidence-based, data-driven research to evaluate information and chains of reasoning critically and fairly and apply literacy and numeracy skills to inform decision-making.

Multicultural Fluency

Recognize the essential nature and importance of culture and cultural identity and their function in communication and in sustaining communities, applying understanding of historical and structural roots of contemporary social challenges, appreciate and respect diversity and diverse perspectives, commit to addressing pressing global issues.  

Civic-Mindedness

Commit and engage in activities to promote the well-being of the community and society at large, engage with community, participate in civic life, volunteer, and serve, promote public good.
