Collaborative Online International Learning

Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) is an approach that connects students and faculty from different cultures and countries to learn, discuss, and collaborate with each other. The faculty participate in the design of the experience and the students in the execution of the designed activities. COIL becomes part of the class, allowing all students to have a meaningful cross-cultural experience within their course of study.

Participating in COIL offers a cost-effective method to provide global experiential learning opportunities, generate new connections with other institutions, and develop diverse teaching skills within the classroom. It also encourages active learning and participation with international peers.

Features of COIL:

  • Promotes interdisciplinary collaboration
  • Duration of 5 to 15 weeks
  • Can be implemented in any language
  • Does not have a specific technology requirement

University of Miami’s COIL is offered through a collaboration between the Platform for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (PETAL) and the Hemispheric University Consortium (HUC). The HUC fosters collaboration among higher education institutions in Latin America, the Caribbean, Canada, and the United States to enhance the quality and reach of their education and research to develop innovative and impactful solutions for the social challenges facing the region and the world. There are 14 member institutions in the HUC.
