Nomination Process

See the full call for nominations for information on award amounts, eligibility, and tips for submitting a successful nomination.

Call for Nominations

Faculty may nominate their eligible colleagues. Faculty may not self-nominate. Nominators will be asked to provide the following:

• Nominee CV
• Nominee biography (no more than half a page, 12-point font, single spaced)
• Nomination statement describing why the nominee is worthy of the award (no more than one page, 12-point font, single spaced)

The deadline to submit nominations is Friday, December 6th at 11:59 p.m.

Award Categories

James M. Tien Early Career Award and Grant

The James M. Tien Early Career award recognizes faculty who have made significant contributions early in their career. At the forefront of their field, the faculty member’s academic record should reflect ongoing and exceptional growth in contribution to their discipline and the University.

Lifetime Achievement

The Lifetime Achievement award recognizes the eminent careers of faculty who have demonstrated sustained extraordinary contributions to their field and have enhanced the reputation of the University through their notable accomplishments.

Outstanding Achievement in Research and Scholarship

The Outstanding Achievement in Research and Scholarship Award recognizes faculty who have contributed a single unique, high-impact scholarly contribution to their field or research program.

Outstanding Achievement in the Arts, Music, and Creative Work

The Outstanding Achievement in the Arts, Music, and Creative Disciplines recognizes faculty who have contributed a single unique, high-impact creative contribution in the arts, music, or other creative discipline.

Inclusive Excellence

The Inclusive Excellence award recognizes faculty who have made exceptional contributions to promote and enhance a sense of belonging amongst diverse constituencies at UM. The faculty member’s behaviors and contributions should exemplify our core value of Diversity. Their work in promoting and enhancing a sense of belonging at the U should extend beyond their primary responsibilities to enhance belonging in their teaching, service/outreach, research, scholarship, and/or creative works.

Distinguished University Citizen

The Distinguished University Citizen award recognizes faculty who have demonstrated outstanding citizenship and institutional building through dedicated academic service to the University community. The faculty member should exemplify deep commitment to service and embody UM’s DIRECCT Values.

Outstanding Department Chair

The Outstanding Department Chair award recognizes exceptional leadership and administrative excellence in department chairs who have made significant contributions to their department's success. This award honors chairs who have fostered an environment that aligns with our DIRECCT values, effectively managed resources, and demonstrated a strong commitment to advancing their department's academic mission, strategic goals and scholarly profile.
